My Vote

Texas

Texas is an imperative choice for expansion due to its rapidly growing Latino population, predominantly Mexican-American and Chicano populations and a growing diverse mixture of Hispanic immigrants from Central and South America particularly in urban areas like Houston. Texas has an Hispanic population of 8.6 million people, the second largest in the nation. Furthermore, Texas had the largest numerical increase in Latino population between 2006 and 2007—a growth of 308,000 Latinos. In perspective, the potential for political influence through Latino civic empowerment in Texas is even greater than the collective impact of Latino voters made in Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico combined. A review of the universe of voters demonstrates a need for Latino civic engagement in key areas around the state—over 1 million eligible but non-registered Latinos in urban areas around the state. Untapped Hispanic populations exist primarily in the Houston, the Dallas/Fort Worth, San Antonio, McAllen, Austin, and El Paso metropolitan areas totaling over 730,000 eligible, non-registered Latino voters.
