My Vote

Nevada

Nevada became an imperative choice for expansion due to its rapidly growing and diverse Hispanic population, including a mixture of Hispanic immigrants from Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. More than 605,000 Hispanics live in Nevada, and thousands are moving to the region every year. While Latinos already account for 24% of Nevada’s population, they only represent 12% of the electorate. Democracia Ahora(D-Ahora) saw great civic engagement potential in the state and, in early 2008, began operations in Las Vegas under the local expert leadership of Nevada State Director Marco Rauda. Below is a brief report of both Democracia Ahora (D-Ahora) and Democraicia USA’s (sister c(3) organization to D-Ahora) work in Nevada.

  • Registered nearly 10,000 new Latino voters in 2008 and mobilized over 90% of them to vote in 2008 General Election; registered new Hispanic voters through volunteer voter registration drives in 2009
  • Assembled student organizations and youth to organize the 2009 and 2010 May Day marches in Las Vegas in support of immigrant rights
  • Worked with nationally-recognized environmental groups to organize a town hall to educate the local Latino community about green jobs and environmental issues
  • Processed hundreds of qualifying citizen Latino applicants in citizenship drives in collaboration with the Hermandad Mexicana organization in both 2008 and 2009
  • Organized a town hall forum to educate the Latino community on the DREAM Act and other immigration issues in 2009
  • Trained and graduated 15 Latino leaders in the Nevada premier of the Democracia USA Leadership Academy in partnership with Wellstone Action in 2009
